Petrounias was the clear favorite for the gold medal in this event. He finished first in qualifying with a score of 15.400. In the final, he won it with a score of 15.433. Silver went to Denis Ablyazin of Russia, and bronze went to Liu Yang of China.

Petrounias defended his World Championships gold from 2015, as they were not held last year due to the Olympics (where he also won gold). The Greek has also dominated at the European Championships, taking gold each of the last three years.
