Apollon Larissa take initiative in race for second
GREEK FOOTBALL LEAGUE - MATCHDAY 24
|Apollon Larissas||3 - 1||Apollon Pontou|
Apollon Larissa took the initiative in the race for second in the 2018/2019 Football League, defeating promotion rivals Apollon Pontou 3:1 at home.
Following this 3:1 victory, Apollon Larissa now solely occupy second place of the Football League with 43 points, three ahead of Apollon Pontou, Platanias and Panachaiki who are all tied on 40 points each. Sixth placed AO Chania Kissamikos are also a further six points behind Apollon Larissa.
Visitors Apollon Pontou began with the initiative, and within nine minutes, they had the lead. Squeezing clean through, Anastasios Dimitriadis managed to slide his effort under the goalkeeper, with the ball subsequently trickling over the line. They should have doubled their money moments later, but a shot was fired wide with the Larissa goalkeeper beaten.
Apollon Pontou were bossing proceedings, but on the stroke of half time, Dimitris Litainas fired a wonderful, powerful volley from long range into the bottom left corner to equalise for Apollon Larissa.
That proved to be the turning point. In the 62nd minute, Brazilian forward Lukas Brambilla scored when unmarked inside the penalty area, and the same player then hit the target again with a superb free-kick in the closing stages to secure the 3:1 win.
Second position of the Football League will grant a place in the promotion/relegation playoff against the club in 13th spot of the Super League.
