Willian Arao and Meriah ready to sign, Olympiacos thrashed by PSV
Olympiacos are closer than ever to sealing the signatures of Willian Arao and Yassine Meriah, but matters on the pitch are not improving. AGONAsport investigates further.
Watch the second leg Champions League qualifier between FC Basel & PAOK LIVE from AGONAsport on Wednesday, August 1st. Details here.
Following a 0:4 drubbing at the hands of Genk on Saturday, the Thrylos were in need of a better performance against PSV Eindhoven in Tuesday’s friendly game, but it turned out to be another disaster. There were no signs of PSV crushing Olympiacos in a goalless first half, but after Jagos Vukovic smashed the bar with a header for the Greeks, the opponents suddenly clicked into gear. In a calamitous 11-minute spell, PSV knocked four unanswered goals past Andreas Gianniotis, handing the Piraeus outfit their second 0:4 thrashing in a matter of days. Luuk de Jong (2), Daniel Schwaab and Donyell Malen were the Dutch scorers.
The alarm bells must be ringing for new boss Pedro Martins, who warned that players continuing to commit individual errors will find themselves excluded from the main roster. Nevertheless, in news which will cheer him up somewhat, the club are close to signing 25-year old Brazilian defensive midfielder Willian Arao. With Olympiacos and Flamengo agreeing on a transfer fee of 2.5 million, Arao will travel to Athens on Friday in order to sign a three-year contract with the Erythrolefkoi and undergo his obligatory medical tests. In a clear sign that the move has been sanctioned, the player was left out of Flamengo’s squad for tomorrow’s Serie A match against Santos.
So far, Willian Arao has spent the entirety of his career in Brazil, playing for São Paulo, Corinthians, Portuguesa, Chapecoense, AC Goianiense and Botafogo before joining Flamengo in 2016. His market value is rated at 3.5 million on Transfermarkt.
An agreement has finally been struck with Tunisian club CS Sfaxien for the transfer of 25-year old defender Yassine Meriah. As previously reported on AGONAsport, the move initially fell through after Sfaxien demanded more money from Olympiacos, but according to the Greek media a bid of 1.8 million euros for the centre-back has now been accepted. Tunisia international Meriah will pen a four-year contract with Olympiacos.
The Thrylos are also displaying interest in Liverpool midfielder Lazar Markovic and Braga striker Ahmed Hassan.
