Pekhart 39', 70'

AEK Athens put in a five-star performance in front of their jubilant fans at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday, putting a sorry Kerkyra team to the sword 5-0 to strengthen their grip on a playoff place.

Two goals apiece from Greece forward Anastasios Bakasetas and Czech striker Thomas Pekhart, and a further striker from Spanish defender Didac Vila saw AEK run out handsome winners in a one-sided affair.

AEK’s players dedicated the victory to their injury-stricken teammate Vassilis Lambropoulos, who recently suffered a ruptured ACL which will put him out for six months. Bakasetas held up a number 5 shirt at the end of the match, signalling the rest of the team’s appreciation an message of goodwill to the 27-year-old Lambropoulos.

The result means that AEK need just two points from their final two SuperLeague matches to secure a place if the playoffs, but perhaps more importantly sets Manolo Jimenez’s team up nicely ahead of their visit to the Georgios Karaiskakis next Thursday where they will face Olympiacos in the first leg of their Greek Cup semi-final showdown.
