AEK Form Water Polo Team

AEK Form Water Polo Team

March 23, 2017 was a historic day for AEK as they announced the formation of a new team in Water Polo. The team’s goal is to play in Greece’s First Division in 5 years.

Starting this summer, the fans of AEK will have a new team to support after the club’s Board of Directors agreed to begin a swimming department. They will firstly introduce a water polo team and in the future, academy teams in both swimming and water polo.

The project will be headed by Panos Michalopoulos and Georgios Kirmizoglou. The competitive teams will not financial burden the Enosis but will be self-financed by sponsors, the business assistance team, and the “Friends of AEK”, fans who have declared their commitment to support the new sporting team and department.

Everything will begin with the formation of a water polo team which will begin in the Greek Third Division in July 2017 with the goal of winning the league and earning promotion to the second division. The ultimate goal is for the team to find themselves in the Greek First Division in five years and to have a leading role in Greek Water Polo.

The team’s coach will be Konstantinos Dandalos, who is the coach of the National Team of Armed Forces, and has previously led Apollona Athinon to the Greek Third and Second Division Titles in consecutive season. The team will look to recruit old experienced players along with young talented players.

The formation of AEK’s water polo team means that Greece’s Big-4 clubs will all have a water polo club with Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, and PAOK all competing in the Greek First Division.
