AEK won’t be allowed to register any players after the club were added to a growing list of clubs sanctioned by FIBA for failing to honour an award from the Basketball Arbitral Tribunal (BAT).
AEK now join the likes of Greek Basket League rivals, Aris, on the list of teams prohibited from adding and new players to their roster after the Thessaloniki outfit were added to the sanctions list last January.
The ban will prohibit AEK from adding any players from the international market until the reigning Basketball Champions League winners resolve two bans pertaining to outstanding settlements.
AEK are the second active Basket League club to be placed on the sanctions list after Aris were blacklisted by FIBA last January as the Thessaloniki outfit were slapped with seven bans for unpaid settlements to various players.
Greek clubs are no stranger to the sanctions list as Greece ranks second behind Turkey for the most clubs sanctioned by FIBA with a total of eight clubs on the list.
In addition to AEK and Aris, the likes of second-tier sides Koroivos and the once-mighty Maroussi are on the sanctions list alongside two women’s clubs.
AEK are confident they will be able to resolve their status on the list in time to purse roster enhancements in the offseason.
