AEK sign Bosnian prospect Sabanadzovic on five year deal
Reigning Greek champions AEK have completed their second deal of the winter transfer window, signing Bosnian prospect Anel Sabanadzovic from Zeljeznicar.
Sabanadzovic, who is incidentally the son of legendary former AEK midfielder Refik Sabanadzovic, has been on the Kitrinomavri’s watchlist since the summer. Born in Missouri, the United States, Sabanadzovic has progressed through the ranks at Zeljeznicar in Bosnia, and in the 2017/2018 season, he won the Bosnian Cup. Currently 19 years of age, his favoured position is playing in the role of a defensive midfielder, and AEK purchased him with a look to the future. Sabanadzovic penned a five year contract with AEK, however he will continue playing for Zeljeznicar on loan until this season ends.
AEK announced his arrival with this following statement:
“AEK FC announces the acquisition of Anel Sabanadzovic from Zeljeznicar. The Bosnian midfielder signed a contract through to 31/12/2023 and will be integrated into our team in the coming summer.”
In his maiden interview with his new employers, Sabanadzovic expressed his desire to live up to his father’s AEK legacy: “I’m really excited to continue my career at such a big club like AEK. I’ve learned everything about this team from my father, and we’ve both watched a lot of AEK matches. He only had great things to say about the atmosphere which the fans create here. I know very well that my surname means a lot here, I understand what my father achieved at AEK, however I will try and follow in his footsteps.”
So far, Sabanadzovic has made 13 Bosnian Premier League appearances for Zeljeznicar in the 2018/2019 campaign, and he also scored one goal in UEFA Europa League qualifying. Sabanadzovic made his debut for the under 21 Bosnian national team in November 2018.
