Manny Harris scored 15 points and added 9 rebounds as AEK shocked rivals Olympiacos 66-62 at OAKA on Sunday night.
After a turbulent week which saw AEK cut ties with coach Sotiris Manolopoulos and replace the Greek manager with acting Academies Director Dragan Sakota, the Enosi added another twist with a massive upset over an Olympiacos side that had been in impressive form as of late.
Jamel MacLean notched a double-double for Olympiacos with 16 points and 12 rebounds, but with Georgios Printezis and Nikola Milutinov forced to leave the game early there was a massive gap in Olympiacos’ offensive production on the night.
Perhaps it can be argued, however, that Olympiacos’ slow start to the contest was to blame for the loss. AEK, despite the recent turmoil at the club, were the better of the two sides in the opening frame as the Athenians raced out to a 22-12 lead in the first quarter.
Olympiacos clawed back in the second quarter to cut the AEK lead to just two points (39-37) by halftime, before moving within one-point by the end of the third quarter (41-40).
The Erythrolefki started the fourth quarter impressively and looked to have set the pace for a win, but an 8-0 run from AEK stole a victory from the Piraeus giants who are now two games behind rivals Panathinaikos in the Greek Basket League standings.
The win sees AEK improve to 5-3 on the season, with the club hoping some of that momentum transfers over to their European campaign when AEK take on Movistar Estudiantes in the FIBA Basketball Champions League.
Olympiacos also return to European competition midweek as Yiannis Sfairopoulos’ men look to continue to keep up their rampant pace on the continent when the Piraeus outfit takes on Brose Bamberg in the EuroLeague.
