AGONA Profile: Douglas Augusto, PAOK’s new midfield enforcer
PAOK completed the signing of talented 22-year-old defensive midfielder Douglas Augusto on a four-year deal which keeps him tied to the club until 2023. The AGONA profile analyses his career further.
Youth career at Fluminense
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Douglas joined Fluminense's youth academy in 2004 when he was just seven years of age. Douglas spent 11 years at the same youth academy before gaining a senior call-up at 18 years of age, which was a proud achievement for himself and his entire family.
Senior debut for Douglas at his childhood club
In 2015, Douglas made his senior debut for Brazilian club Fluminense 11 years after joining the club’s academy. In 2016, Douglas became a starting eleven regular for the senior team and he his good form was rewarded with a contract extension keeping hm tied to the club until 2021.
Health struggles throughout 2017 and 2018
Douglas suffered from Reiter syndrome in 2017. He would wake up to the feeling of aching joints, swollen knuckles, and struggled to walk. Douglas would often wake up in pain and would sometimes need a wheelchair to move around. He feared at stages if he would ever play football again. Thankfully the Brazilian midfielder was detected and diagnosed with the health issue early on and began the road to recovery.
The recovery process was not easy for the Brazilian, having to take two injections a week which cost him 2,500 euros for each injection and 20,000 euros per month. The recovery process took around three months. Douglas travelled to the United States in order to undertake special training which ensured he could return back to playing football again within three months. However, Douglas still underwent regular treatment throughout 2018.
Douglas joins Corinthians
Douglas transferred to Corinthians for €1 million in the summer of 2018. At his time with Corinthians, Douglas made a total of 15 appearances across all competitions and scored on one occasion for the club. He became a regular in the first team as soon as he arrived, however, a coaching change during the season saw him sent out on loan to join Bahia.
Douglas spends time on loan at Bahia
From January 2019, Douglas was sent out on loan to Brazilian outfit Bahia for the remainder of the season. However, struggling for regular first team football, he only made a total of seven appearances for Bahia in half of the campaign.
First move abroad
Last week, Greek champions PAOK confirmed the signing of the young midfielder in order to bolster the club’s options and depth in the middle of the park. His transfer to PAOK is his first move abroad and away from his native Brazil.
The defensive midfield will look to gain the trust of new PAOK manager Abel Ferreira and earn a spot in the starting XI for the new season. The Thessalonikis lack options in the middle of the park and Augusto will hope to take full advantage of the opportunity at hand.
He is known for his distribution abilities, whether it be short or long balls. This is certainly helped by his tremendous sense of space by watching the movement of his teammates while he also does well to protect the ball with his body in pressure situations. In his defensive responsibilities, Augusto must improve in 1v1 duels and challenges in the air.
