Ambitious Ionikos add Mavrokefalidis
Ionikos Nikaias are proving they are determined to earn promotion to the Greek Basket League with the acquisition of Greek journeyman, Loukas Mavrokefalidis…
Determined to return to the top flight of Greek basketball for the first time since the 1986/1987 season, A2 Basket League side Ionikos Nikaias are certainly ‘putting their money where their mouth is’ after a flurry of moves.
Ionikos, who have struggled to find stable ground since their relegation from the top flight 32 years ago, are keen to make the most of a strong start to the 2018/2019 season in the second tier of Greek basketball.
The side from the Piraeus region have announced the acquisition of former Greek international Loukas Mavrokefalidis in a bid to boost their chances of promotion, which currently look positive after a 6-1 start in the A2 Basket League.
Mavrokefalidis, who was a free agent after a short spell with Lithuanian outfit Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius, agreed to join Ionikos on a one-year deal. The 34-year-old has been somewhat of a journeyman in Greek and European basketball after beginning his professional career with PAOK.
Ionikos will be hoping that Mavrokefalidis will added much-needed experience to the club’s roster, which will be losing the experienced Roeland Schaftenaar due to injury.
Mavrokefalidis’ arrival coincides with Nikos Vetoulas’ take over as head coach after the 44-year-old joined Ionikos following his departure from Basket League side Kolossos earlier this season.
