Olympiacos and Kolossos relegated to A2, Lavrio stay
On Tuesday, the Board of Directors of the Basket League confirmed that Olympiacos and Kolossos Rhodes have been relegated to the second division, while Lavrio remain in the top tier.
ESAKE released this following statement:
“It has been confirmed that Kolossos Rhodes BC and Olympiacos finished in 13th and 14th place respectively of the 2018/2019 Men’s A1 Basketball Division.”
The 2018/2019 Basket League standings were also validated.
As a result, both Kolossos and Olympiacos suffer relegation to the second division, while Lavrio have been allowed to stay in the Basket League for the 2019/2020 season.
Initially, Lavrio were set to be relegated, but they successfully appealed against that decision after protesting its validity. Lavrio felt that their demotion would have been unfair given that it only happened because Panathinaikos threw their game against Kymi on the final day of the regular season.
A majority of 10-2 voted in favour of Lavrio remaining in the Basket League. Aris were against the idea and Holargos abstained.
It has also been revealed that Holargos BC, who made the playoffs in the past season, will not participate in the 2019/2020 Basket League campaign. There has been no final decision so far as to who will take their place in the championship.
Olympiacos reacted to the ESAKE statement:
“This is another unacceptable decision from ESAKE, which shows what is going on in Greek basketball and explains why Olympiacos no longer participates in these farcical meetings.”
