Emmanouilidis to play on loan in Nea Smyrni
Youth prospect Dimitris Emmanouilidis is set to be loaned to Panionios, with Panathinaikos wanting the young attacker to gain more experience in Nea Smyrni.
No one doubts the potential which Emmanouilidis boasts. Last season, the technically gifted teenage forward managed to score two goals in the Super League in games against Lamia and Panetolikos, while also striking twice in the Greek Cup. Many consider the 18-year-old to be the most talented young player on Panathinaikos’ books, but despite that fact, it seems the Prasini will send him on loan to Panionios for the 2019/2020 campaign.
Panathinaikos have bolstered their ranks this summer, notably signing the more experienced Ghayas Zahid and Yohan Mollo. While Emmanouilidis possesses plenty of talent, it’s unlikely that head coach Giorgos Donis would have given him a lot of opportunities this year, and Panathinaikos subsequently took the decision to loan him to Panionios. On one hand, Emmanouilidis is sure to receive more chances in Nea Smyrni to showcase his ability, but on the other, he wasn’t given enough time in pre-season friendlies to really prove himself to the Panathinaikos coaching staff.
In the 2018/2019 season, Emmanouilidis made 16 appearances in all competitions for Panathinaikos, staying on the field of play for a combined total of 529 minutes. He added one assist to his tally of four goals.
Plenty of talented Greeks have begun to create a positive reputation for themselves when playing in Nea Smyrni. Two years ago, PAOK loanee Lazaros Lamprou played regularly for Panionios before he joined Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands, and Giorgos Masouras was snapped up by Olympiacos in late 2018 after impressing with the Panthers. Time will tell if Emmanouilidis will be able to fully use the potential which everyone knows he has.
