Anorthosis throw AEL from top spot
CYPRIOT FIRST DIVISION - MATCHDAY 14
|AEL Limassol||0 - 3||Anorthosis|
AEL Limassol will start the new year and for the first time this season without occupying first place in the Cypriot First Division standings. Anorthosis visited the Tsireio Stadium in Limassol and managed to leave with an impressive 3:0 win.
The hosts started the game off better pressing to find an early goal, however Anorthosis held their ground and limited the danger to Ivan Vargic’s net. Anorthosis balanced the play, but the game lacked any clear cut chances, until the 36th minute. Michal Duris received a long ball inside AEL’s penalty area, he took the shot, the ball deflected off Dossa Junior and fooled Vozinha to give the visitors a 1:0 lead. The goal sparked AEL in the final stages of the first half, however Vargic said no to both Ruben Jurado and Marko Adamovic sending his team into halftime with the slender lead.
AEL came in looking for the equalizer and within a minute into the second half, a backheel effort from Andreas Makris was stopped again by Vargic. Anorthosis, however, were the team that found the back of the net once again. In the 55th minute, Junior sent a bad ball without pressure towards Kevin Lafrance, Beka Mikeltadze intercepted it, his shot deflected off the ground and Vozinha was beaten once again.
Despite, AEL’s attempt to put pressure on the visitors, Anorthosis’ Duris 81st minute put the icing on the cake with his second goal in the 81st minute. Mikeltadze stole the ball between the midfield and his own penalty area, carried the ball inside AEL’s half and gave it to Erwin Koffi, who gave the assist to Duris for the final 3:0 scoreline.
Anorthosis proved on the field that they wanted the game more than AEL and are now fourth in the standings, comfortably holding their place in the first playoff group. The Famagusta team continued their improvement under Yurgen Streppel and they look forward to better results in 2019.
AEL received another heavy defeat from a team in the first six, after their 3:0 and 4:1 losses to Apollon and Salamina, respectively. The Limassol side dropped to second, one point behind new leaders APOEL and are hoping to improve their form during the winter break and return stronger in January.
