Another setback for Volos NFC, Key wins for Panachaiki, Iraklis, Apollon Pontou

Volos NFC went winless for a fourth consecutive match, however Apollon Larissas could not capitalize after playing to a 2:2 draw with Aittitos Spaton. Panachaiki, Apollon Pontou, and Iraklis registered key wins over AE Karaiskakis, Kerkyra and Sparti, respectively.

Leaders Volos NFC remained winless for a fourth consecutive match after playing to a 1:1 draw against Trikala. The visitors opening the scoring in the 17th minute through Tsimikas, however a 69th minute penalty from Pitu salvaged a draw for the hosts. Despite the dropped points, Volos maintained their five point advantage atop the standings while Trikala are tied for twelfth with 22 points.

Second placed Apollon Larissas failed to capitalize on Volos NFC’s draw against Trikala as the Larissa side also drew on Sunday 2:2 away to Aittitos Spaton. Apollon opened the scoring in the eighth minute through Kourtesiotis but seven minutes later, Zafirakis equalized for the hosts. After a first half deadlock, Apollon Larissas were reduced to ten men when Lucao was given a straight red card. Rooney made the man advantage count as he put Aittitos Spaton ahead in the 56th minute, but Brambilla equalized from the penalty spot kick 17 minutes from the end to salvage a point for Larissa. The Thessaly club trail Volos NFC by five points while Aittitos Spaton sit tied for twelfth with Trikala on 22 points.

Despite playing with ten men from 66th minute (Kaznaferis sent off), Iraklis managed to walk away with the three points away to lowly Sparti, their first win in 1.5 months. Orfanidis’ 74th minute goal separated the sides at the final whistle as Iraklis move into ninth place (tied with Drama) on 27 points while relegation bound Sparti are second from bottom with 15 points.

Apollon Pontou ended Kerkyra’s hopes for promotion after the Thessaloniki side dispatched the islanders 0:2 on the road. Two penalties from Pourtoulidis in either half (39, 90+5) was enough to give Apollon the three points as they move ahead of their opponents into fifth with 36 points while Kerkyra moved to sixth with 34 points.

On Saturday, Panachaiki defeated AE Karaiskakis 0:1 on the road and are just two points behind second placed Apollon Larissas. Polimos was the hero for the Patra side as he found the winning goal just two minutes from the end.

In other action, Doxa Dramas took down struggling Aiginiakos 2:0 as Irodotos defeated AOX Kissamikos 2:1 in one of two Cretan derbies over the weekend.
