AOX Kissamikos changing name to FC Chania
On Wednesday, AOX Kissamikos owner Antonis Rokakis announced a historic decision for Football League club. Starting the 2019/20 season, the club will change names from AOX Kissamikos to FC Chania.
Before 2017, the Chania municipality was represented by two separate sides in the 2016/17 Football League in AO Chania and PGS Kissamikos. However, AO Chania suffered through financial trouble and were relegated to the Greek third division (Gamma Ethniki) at the end of the 2017 season while PGS Kissamikos were becoming a well-establish, mid-table side in the second tier. As a result, on 23 August 2017 the two clubs merged as AO Chania−Kissamikos and would go on to compete in the second division in the 2017/18 season and in the current 2018/19 season.
The club, however, will undergo another name change starting next season as revealed by Rokakis on Wednesday in an official press conference. The owner stated that AO Chania - Kissamikos will be renamed to FC Chania (ΠΑΕ Χανιά) starting the 2019/20 season. He mentioned that the name change is a historic one for the club as it aims to unite the city of Chania and build one strong team that can represent the area in the football scene. Rokakis wants Chania to grow as a footballing city, setting high goals for the club, and feels that the first step in accomplishing this is by changing the club’s current name to Chania.
