APOEL defeat Omonia in Nicosia derby
CYPRIOT FIRST DIVISION - MATCHDAY 25
|APOEL||2 - 1||Omonia|
|Ebecilio 4',14'||Derbyshire 39'|
Reigning Cypriot champions APOEL remain in first place of the First Division, defeating rivals Omonia 2:1 at home in the Nicosia derby.
Two early goals from Dutch forward Lorenzo Ebecilio were enough for APOEL to hold off the challenge of a spirited Omonia side at the GSP Stadium, despite prolific striker Matt Derbyshire scoring his 17th of the season.
Ebecilio broke the deadlock within four minutes in Nicosia, thumping a fantastic long-range strike beyond Omonia goalkeeper Andreas Christodoulou’s despairing dive. The 26-year old then repeated the trick moments later, firing an unstoppable attempt into the roof of the net when inside the penalty area.
Nevertheless, Omonia weren’t prepared to roll over. English forward Matt Derbyshire escaped his marker on 39 minutes, neatly heading a looping cross into the right corner to make it a one-goal game.
In a tight second half, the visitors had a glorious opportunity to equalise. A poor pass from Efstathios Aloneftis allowed Jarchino Antonia to charge through 1 on 1, however the latter failed to beat sprawling APOEL goaltender Nauzet Perez. Both Igor de Camargo and Giorgos Merkis missed excellent late chances for APOEL, but it mattered little as they saw the game out with minimal fuss.
Second placed Apollon Limassol beat Alki Oroklini 5:1, meaning that APOEL’s lead at the top of the Cypriot First Division stays at two points. Omonia are 16 points behind in sixth position.
