Antonio Jakolis and Musa Al-Taamari gave the defending champions a two goal lead in the first half before a second Jakolis goal and a penalty kick from captain Nuno Morais formed the final 4:0 scoreline. APOEL are now seven points clear of Apollon and will await the result of Apollon’s match against Omonoia on Sunday before a top of the table clash next week.

APOEL started strong, looking to gain the early lead, while Salamina looked to hold them off. In the 10th minute, a perfect pass from Lucas Souza put Jakolis face to face with Orfeas Lytras. The Croatian winger successfully finished his effort and gave the home side the early lead.

Twelve minutes later, Al-Taamari escaped from the right side but this time Lytras was able to stop the shot. While it looked as if APOEL would take a one-goal lead into the break, a miscommunication between Agustin Garcia and Lytras saw Al-Taamari steal the ball and score in front of an empty net for the 2:0 APOEL lead.

The pace slowed down in the second half as APOEL sat on their lead, with Salamina were unable to threaten their opponents. In the 74th minute, Jakolis struck again with a top class goal from inside Salamina’s penalty area, beating Lytras for the 3:0 APOEL lead.

A minute later, it was the visitors turn to touch the goal, however Boy Waterman stopped Charles Eloundou’s close-ranged shot. In the 85th minute, Lytras came up big against Al-Taamari saving his team from another goal.

During stoppage time, though, Al-Taamari was brought down by Garcia and a penalty was awarded. Morais beat Lytras from the spot and seal an emphatic 4:0 APOEL win.
