APOEL learn Europa League fate
APOEL were drawn into Group A of the UEFA Europa League and will look to claim second spot and advance to the knockout stages.
APOEL may have narrowly missed out on the UEFA Champions League group stage after falling to Ajax 2-0 on aggregate in the playoffs, but as a consolation, they will be participating in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. The draw took place on Friday with APOEL seeded in pot two.
The Cypriot champions were placed into Group A with a mixed bag of opposition. One opponent will be a familiar one in the form of Azerbaijani side Qarabag. APOEL already faced off against Qarabag in their Champions League qualifiers this summer, when they overturned a 2:1 home loss with a 2:0 win in Azerbaijan - which also included some politically charged controversy off the pitch.
Also in their group are reputed Spanish side Sevilla, who have won the UEFA Europa League five times, most recently in 2016. Rounding out the pack are Dudelange from Luxembourg, who faced off against Olympiacos in the group phase last season.
APOEL will be content with the draw and is expected to fight with Qarabag for second place in the group. Sevilla are the clear favorites to top the group while the outsiders, Dudelange, will hope to make some noise in their second consecutive season in the group stages.
APOEL’s schedule is as follows:
v Dudelange, 19 September
@ Sevilla, 3 October
@ Qarabag, 24 October
v Qarabag, 7 November
@ Dudelange, 28 November
v Sevilla, 12 December
