Apollon bow out of Europa League with meek 3:0 setback to Everton
UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE (GROUP E) - MATCHDAY 6
|Apollon Limassol||0 - 3||Everton|
Apollon Limassol’s spirited Europa League campaign came to a sad end against Everton, as the Cypriot Cup winners dropped a 3:0 defeat at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia.
Both sides had already been ruled out of playoff contention before this match, but Apollon were hungry for a first win in the competition against a young Everton team. However, the English outfit claimed their debut victory in the group stages with a classy performance. 20 year old Ademola Lookman broke the deadlock midway through the first half with a firm header, before the same player unleashed a thunderbolt into the top corner to double Everton’s advantage.
The Cypriot hosts threw everything at Everton in the second half, however they rarely troubled away goalkeeper Joel Robles. Lookman came close to a hat trick at the other end, but his tricky effort was saved by the alert Tasos Kissas. Everton were always dangerous on the counterattack, and with time running down, they eventually scored their third goal. Nikola Vlasic powered towards the Apollon goal, sliding an attempt into the net.
Apollon finish in last place of Group E with three draws in six matches. Everton take third spot, while Atalanta and Lyon progress to the Last 32
