Apollon Pontou and Panachaiki miss penalties in goalless draw
GREEK FOOTBALL LEAGUE - MATCHDAY 23
|Apollon Pontou||0 - 0||Panachaiki|
In a vital match in the Football League promotion battle, Apollon Pontou and Panachaiki missed a penalty apiece in a 0:0 draw, a result which leaves the two teams level on 40 points.
Hosting the game at the Kalamaria Stadium, it was an ideal opportunity for Apollon Pontou to take the initiative in the race for second place, but Panachaiki refused to back down as the game ended goalless with both teams missing penalties.
In the first half, Christos Eleftheriadis’ spot-kick was saved by the Apollon Pontou goalkeeper, before the hosts then contrived to miss a penalty of their own in the 59th minute as Nikos Pourtoulidis blazed his attempt over the crossbar.
Incidentally, earlier in the week, media reports in Patras stated that former Greek national team goalkeeper Kostas Chalkias has become the new technical director of Panachaiki. The role used to be held by Kostas Katsouranis.
At the moment, Volos NFC lead the Football League standings with 49 points, but Apollon Pontou, Panachaiki and Apollon Larissa are all level on 40 points each. Second position in the Football League grants a berth in the promotion/relegation playoff against the 13th best Super League club.
