Apollon Sink Xanthi To Chalk Up First Win
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 8
|Apollon Smyrni||2 - 0||Xanthi|
SuperLeague strugglers Apollon Smyrni finally claimed their first win of the season at the eighth attempt on Sunday, defeating Skoda Xanthi 2-0 at the Georgios Kamaras Stadium, while there was also a first win for Larissa, who recorded a 1-0 away success at Platanias.
Apostolos Mantzios’ beleaguered team, who have struggled to cope with the level of quality after moving up from the Football League in the summer, sealed their first victory courtesy of
Gonzalo Castillejos’ early goal and a late strike from Christos Alpanis.
The Argentine forward netted in the 11th minute after the home side made a lively start against a Xanthi team who have struggled to show the title-chasing form that they produced last season. Alpanis then killed off any hopes of a late equaliser from the visitors by doubling the advantage six minutes from full-time
The result means the Elafra Taxioarchia (Light Brigade in English) remain in the lower half of the table but they now have six points, while Xanthi remain in mid-table with nine points.
Larissa Notch Up First Win Against Platanias
|Platanias||0 - 1||Larissa|
Down in Chania, Crete, Larissa also managed to achieve the same feat as Apollon in chalking up a long-awaited first three-point haul of the season.
The crucial moment for Ilias Fyntanis’ team, who have been rooted to the foot of the table since early September, came in the 21st minute when Croatian striker Sandi Križman opened the scoring.
The Vissini produced a determined defensive display to hold off the attack-minded home side for the remainder of the match, claiming a vital win which will give them hopes of pushing on to climb away from the lower reaches of the table.
