Aris and Atromitos discover Europa League opponents
Aris will play AEL Limassol in the second qualifying round of the 2019/2020 UEFA Europa League, while Atromitos have been pitted against either Cracovia or DAC Dunajska Streda.
Last season, Aris impressed in their maiden Super League campaign after recovering from a crippling financial crisis, claiming fifth place while playing exciting, attractive football along the way. As a result of PAOK winning the Greek Cup, Aris were handed a berth in the second qualifying round of the Europa League, and they have subsequently been drawn against AEL Limassol.
In the 2018/2019 season, AEL earned their first trophy in seven years, defeating APOEL 2:0 in the final of the Cypriot Cup. Based at the Tsirion Stadium in Limassol, AEL were formed 1930, and they have won the Cypriot First Division six times in their history. AEL most recently played in the group stage of the Europa League in the 2012/2013 campaign.
AEL were in fourth position of the 2018/2019 Cypriot First Division after tallying 55 points in 32 matches, 15 behind champions APOEL.
ATROMITOS TO PLAY WINNER OF CRACOVIA - STREDA PAIRING
Under the guidance of the wily Damir Canadi, Atromitos finished in fourth position of the Super League for the second consecutive season, making the most of their seemingly limited resources. This summer, Canadi decided to leave Atromitos, and newly appointed boss Giannis Anastasiou has been charged with the task of taking the Peristeri outfit to the group stages of the Europa League.
Atromitos have been drawn against either Cracovia or DAC Dunajska Streda in the second qualifying round. The two teams in question will play each other in the first phase of qualification. The first leg will be held on the road and the second leg will be played at Atromitos’ Peristeri stadium.
Founded in 1906, Cracovia have won five Ekstraklasa titles in Poland, but their last time they became champions was back in 1948. In the previous season, the Poles earned a return to European football, finishing in fourth position of the domestic championship to be granted a place in the first qualifying round of the Europa League. Cracovia last played in the competition in 2016 when they lost 1:4 on aggregate to Shkendija in the first qualifying phase.
For their part, DAC Dunajska Streda have never won the Slovakian league, but they embarked on an impressive run to second place in the 2018/2019 season to grab a Europa League spot. Streda conceded a 2:7 aggregate loss to Dinamo Minsk in the second qualifying round of last season’s Europa League.
The first leg will take place on July 25, before the return is held on August 1.
