Asteras and Xanthi set to fight for final Europa League spot

Asteras Tripolis and Xanthi will fight for the final Europa League spot on the last matchday of this year’s Greek SuperLeague.

Watch LIVE from AEK's date with history as they look to become European Champions against AS Monaco in the FIBA Champions League FINAL on Sunday, May 6th.

With one game remaining in this year’s Greek SuperLeague, the only thing to be determined on the last matchday is Greece’s 3rd and final Europa League representative for the 2018/19 season. The championship has been clinched by AEK, PAOK are certain to finish as runner ups and will participate in next year’s Champions League, while Olympiacos and Atromitos will compete in next year’s Europa League. Relegation has also been settled with Kerkyra and Platanias assured a place in next year’s Football League.

Greece’s 5th European placement is still up for grabs with Asteras Tripolis and Xanthi being the two possible contenders. The two teams are fighting for a 5th place finish in this year’s SuperLeague which leads to a spot in next year’s UEFA Europa League 2nd qualifying round.

The two teams are currently tied on 42 points with one game remaining, however Asteras Tripolis hold the tiebreaker advantage due to their better goal differential (+13 compared to 0). Overall goal differential is the ultimate tiebreaker since the two teams played to two draws during their two encounters earlier this season.

Asteras are the clear favorites to finish 5th as they control their own fate when they travel to face Panetolikos in Agrinio on Sunday. The Arkades will secure 5th spot with a win in Agrinio without having to worry about Xanthi’s result. They will also finish fifth if they earn the same or better result than Xanthi on Sunday.

On the other hand, the Thracian club have a tougher test as they matchup against Panathinaikos at the Apostolos Nikolaides stadium in Athens. Xanthi will need a better result than Asteras Tripolis to jump ahead of the Tripolitsiotes and steal a spot in next year’s Europa League.
