Asteras Tripolis secured their SuperLeague survival on Sunday thanks to a 3-0 win at home to Panionios, while OFI were condemned to a relegation playoff after finishing 13th despite claiming a superb 2-0 away win over Atromitos.
At the Theodoros Kolokotronis stadium in Tripoli the home side were deserved winners, as goals from Giannis Christopoulos, Walter Iglesias and Nikos Kaltsas gave Georgios Paraschos’ team three precious points to secure their top flight status.
The result means Tripolis end the campaign in 11th place, leapfrogging Xanthi who lost heavily 7-2 at Aris, while Panionios remain unmoved in sixth.
OFI headed for playoff after Atromitos triumph
|Atromitos||0 - 2||OFI|
OFI produced one of their best performances of the season to beat high-flyers Atromitos 2-0 in Peristeri, but although the win prevented them from being automatically relegated, the Cretans still have to negotiate a relegation playoff match.
At the Peristeri Municipal Stadium however, it was as is this OFI team had put all their worries to one side, playing with freedom and attacking verve to defeat outgoing coach Damir Canadi’s team.
Goals from Juan Neira (21) and Ismail Sassi (74) did the damage for OFI, while there was not much to write home about for Atromtos, who put in one of their poorest displays of the campaign.
Despite the poor result, there were still fireworks and a standing ovation for the home side from their fans at the final whistle in acknowledgment of a great season. Atromitos ended the campaign in fourth place and will go into the Europa League qualifiers in the summer.
