This summer, Athanasiadis’ contract with Asteras Tripolis is expiring, and the 26-year-old had been targeted by AEK as a possible replacement for the in-demand Vasilis Barkas. Makis Giannikoglou, the third choice at AEK during the 2018/2019 campaign, recently departed the Enosis. Panagiotis Tsintotas was back-up to Barkas this season.

AEK unveiled the signing of Athanasiadis with this following statement:

“AEK FC announces the arrival of goalkeeper Giorgos Athanasiadis, who signed a contract through to the summer of 2023.

Giorgos Athanasiadis, welcome to the AEK family!”

Athanasiadis commented on the development:

“I am very happy to transfer to a large club. This is a very big step in my career. AEK already have two excellent goalkeepers, and it will be a pleasure to work alongside them. I am sure that our healthy competition will be beneficial to the team. I have moved here to work and help AEK achieve their goals. We know that AEK are a big team and we have to win the championship and the cup every year. That is what we will try to do.”

Athanasiadis has played for Panthrakikos and Asteras Tripolis as a senior player. In the 2018/2019 season, he was largely the number two goalkeeper behind Nikos Papadopoulos in Tripoli, restricted to 17 appearances across all competitions.

According to reports, Sporting Lisbon attacking midfielder Francisco Geraldes will soon travel to Athens, with AEK set to loan the 24-year-old in the 2019/2020 season.

Geraldes will become the second new AEK player to be directly selected by Kitrinomavri boss Miguel Cardoso. If reports in the media are to be believed, Geraldes will travel to Athens next week in order to complete his AEK transfer from Sporting Lisbon. Geraldes will initially play on loan, but in the summer of 2020, AEK will have the option to sign a permanent deal with the midfielder.

The Portuguese footballer only played in three Liga NOS games in the 2018/2019 season. In the past, Geraldes has been sent out on loan to Moreirense, Rio Ave and Eintracht Frankfurt from Sporting.

At the training camp in Poland, which will take place between the 2nd and 16th of July, AEK will play in these following friendly matches:

July 7, AEK - Górnik Zabrze SSA

July 12, AEK - AS Trencin

July 15, AEK - Maccabi Netanya

July 16, AEK - Stal Stalowa Wola FC

Uros Cosic and Giannis Gianniotas, both out of favour at AEK and expected to leave in the off-season, will not travel to Poland with the senior squad. AEK will try to come to a mutual agreement with the players to cancel their contracts which are valid for a further two years.

On June 20, AEK will present the season ticket system for the 2019/2020 campaign, with the season to be the club’s final at the Olympic Stadium before moving into the new Agia Sofia Stadium in Nea Filadelfeia.

Season ticket holders for the past three years will be given priority in 2020 for booking their seats at the Agia Sofia Stadium.

In changes to the management, Alexis Alexiou is now the AEK vice-president, Evangelos Aslanidis becomes the chairman of the Board of Directors and Minas Lysandrou assumes the role of CEO.
