Atromitos beat Aris to clinch fourth
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 28
|Aris||0 - 2||Atromitos|
Atromitos locked up a fourth-placed finish in the SuperLeague on Sunday with an impressive 2-0 away win over rivals Aris in Thessaloniki at the Kleanthis Vikelidis stadium.
A powerful first-half displayed played in rain-soaked conditions proved the difference between the two sides, with goals from Giorgos Manousos and top scorer Efthymis Koulouris sealing the three points for Damir Canadi’s team.
The result means Atromitos are guaranteed to finish in fourth spot, which is a just reward for another excellent season from the Peristeri club. Aris, who have also had a great campaign after promotion from the second tier, lock in fifth place sitting eight points ahead of Panathinaikos with two matches to play. If AEK or PAOK win the Greek Cup, Aris will also play in Europe next season alongside Atromitos.
The visitors seemed determined to achieve their objective as early as possible in this Matchday 28 encounter, as a strong start helped them take the lead when their first clear chance came in the 17th minute.
Koulouris, who is on loan from champions-elect PAOK, was a major protagonist in the goal, proving a precise cross for Manousos to score with a powerful header.
The 23-year-old striker then scored his 18th goal of the season with a clinical finish from Bruno’s pass to wrap up a deserved victory for the visitors against an Aris team that looked bereft of attacking ideas in this match.
