Atromitos dreaming of the Champions League

Atromitos dreaming of the Champions League

Atromitos Athens are enjoying a superb season in the Super League, currently occupying fourth place in table. While the Peristeri based club may be content with a place in the UEFA Europa League, a shot at the Champions League can’t be written off.

In 24 matches during the 2017/2018 campaign, Atromitos have only lost twice, winning 12 games and drawing the remaining 10. Trailing AEK by eight points, Atromitos require a minor miracle to win a maiden Greek title, but they do have an outside chance of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. At the moment, the Peristeri outfit find themselves only three points behind second place PAOK, and the two teams do play against each other in ten days’ time. Remember that the top two clubs in Greece receive the chance to play in the Champions League qualifying rounds.

Taking into account Atromitos’ upcoming fixtures in the Super League, the championship’s surprise team could very well spring another shock before the season is done.

Atromitos’ remaining six Super League matches:

Panionios (away), March 10;

PAOK (home), March 17;

Panathinaikos (away), April 1;

Platanias (home), April 22;

Levadiakos (away), April 29;

AOK Kerkyra (home), May 6.

Current Super League standings:

AEK, 54 points

PAOK, 49 points*

Olympiacos, 47 points**

Atromitos, 46 points

*- Includes PAOK’s three-point deduction which is currently being appealed against.

**- Includes Olympiacos’ three-point deduction which is currently being appealed against.

PAOK should have been out of sight, but their 0:3 technical defeat to Olympiacos coupled with a three-point deduction for the chaos in Thessaloniki has gifted Atromitos a glimmer of hope. The next three matches against Panionios, PAOK and Panathinaikos will be tough, but if Atromitos can gather a solid amount of points from those games including a win over PAOK, Damir Canadi’s men can really put the pressure on the top three in the final weeks of the season
