Atromitos Move Top After Bringing AEK Back Down To Earth
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 8
|AEK||0 - 1||Atromitos|
AEK Athens slumped to a shock 1-0 home defeat to Atromitos on Monday and are without a win in their last three SuperLeague matches, just four days after the euphoria of claiming a goalless Europa League draw against AC Milan.
Manolo Jimemez’s team earned themselves plenty of plaudits for their mid-week heroics in Italy, but they were second best against Danir Camadi’s impressive Atromitos team, who moved top of the table with 16 points as a result of a superb victory.
Nigerian forward Abiola Dauda scored the only goal of the game after 55 minutes, ghosting in between AEK defenders Michalis Bakakis and Vassilis Lambropoulos to score with a first-time shot from Theodoros Vasilakakis’ right-wing cross.
Chances were at a premium for both sides in a match where defences were on top for long spells, although AEK did miss out on the chance earlier in the match to take the lead just after half-time when captain Petros Mantalos hit the post.
There were appeals for a penalty by AEK turned away by the referee 15 minutes from time when Mantalos went down in a challenge by Atromitos defender Spiros Risvanis, but replays were inconclusive with both players appearing to come together rather than a foul taking place.
