Theodoros Vasilakakis’ superb long range drive into the left corner on eight minutes was enough for Atromitos, who were good value for their victory against Asteras.
Vasilakakis could have doubled Atromitos’ lead not long after scoring the opener, but his close range header was brilliantly saved by Asteras goalkeeper Giorgos Athanasiadis. Atromitos continued to have the better of a scrappy first half, preventing the hosts from creating openings near their penalty area.
Early in the second half, Atromitos should have doubled the advantage. A corner fell to the feet of the lurking Spyros Risvanis, however the defender contrived to side-foot wide with the goal at his mercy. Nevertheless, as time wore on, Asteras slowly began pressing for an equaliser. Michalis Manias had two glorious opportunities to bring the home team level, but after missing the target following a mistake from the Atromitos netminder, his goalbound effort at point blank range was blocked on the line.
That was the closest Asteras would come, as Atromitos held on for the 1:0 win. The second leg will take place in January in Athens
