|Greece U19||0 - 2||Ukraine U19|
The Greek U19 National Team got off to a negative start in the UEFA Euro 2017 Elite Qualifying Round suffering a 2-0 defeat to the Ukraine.
The Greek U19 National Team is in a difficult position after falling 2-0 to the Ukraine in their opening match in the UEFA Euro 2017 Elite Qualifying Round. Giannis Goumas’ men were without Olympiacos star Panagiotis Retsos (suspended) and 26 minutes into today’s match, Vrousai was subbed off due to an injury.
The first good chance of the game fell to Ukraine in the 22nd minute when Shaparenko was unable to convert from the penalty spot, however in first half stoppage time, Ukraine found the breakthrough with Mykolenko’s goal.
In the second half, Ukraine picked up where they left off in the first half and four minutes after the restart, they doubled their lead when Rusyn found the back of the net.
The Ethniki Neon were given a lifeline when Yakimets was sent off in the 50th minute for the Ukraine, however Greece were unable to find the goal that would bring them back into the game as the Ukraine held on for the 2-0 win.
The loss puts Greece in a difficult position with two games left to play in the group. The group favorites, the Netherlands, defeated Finland in the group’s other match and sit with 3 points atop the standings with Ukraine.
Only the group winner will qualify for the European Championships, meaning Greece will need to win their final two matches to have any hopes of claiming top spot in Group 1. Their next match is on Saturday against Finland.
