Baghdatis advances at Wimbledon
Marcos Baghdatis prolonged his career by defeating Canadian Brayden Schnur in straight sets in the first round of Wimbledon.
Baghdatis, who is retiring from tennis after this tournament, was playing against the Canadian for the first time. The former semi-finalist breezed through the first set, taking it 6-2. He then was able to save all four break points faced in the second set to win it 6-4. He would also go on to win the third set by the same score to advance to the second round of Wimbledon for the tenth time in his career.
The 34-year-old Cypriot will now play on Thursday against 17th seeded Matteo Berrettini of Italy in the second round. The Italian defeated Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene in four sets in the first round. Baghdatis and Berrettini have never played against each other before, and the winner will advance to the third round to face either 24th seeded Diego Schwartzman of Argentina or German wildcard Dominik Koepfer.
Before Baghdatis and Berrettini take the court on Thursday, Greece’s Maria Sakkari will be in action on Wednesday. The number 31 seed will play her second round match against Czech lucky loser Marie Bouzkova (world number 115). The two have never played against each other before, and the winner will face either world number eight Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, or unseeded Margarita Gasparyan of Russia, in the third round.
