Now 24 years of age, Barkas initially joined AEK in July 2016 from Atromitos, costing the Enosis 600,000 euros, Since then, the goalkeeper standing at 1.95 meters has become a leading figure for AEK, gaining the number one spot between the sticks and impressing with excellent showings. Last summer, he received a serious injury which left him on the sidelines until late 2017, but Barkas returned to the squad after Giannis Anestis was frozen out and shared goalkeeping duties with Panagiotis Tsintotas in the Super League while participating in all knockout cup fixtures. As a reward for his success, Barkas made his senior Greek national team debut in a friendly match against Egypt (1:0) on March 27.

On Thursday afternoon, AEK announced that Barkas had renewed his contract through to 2022 in an official statement: “Vasilis Barkas has extended his AEK contract to 2022.”
