Barkas commits future to AEK until 2022
Promising AEK Athens goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas has committed his future to the Greek champions, signing a new contract through to 2022.

Now 24 years of age, Barkas initially joined AEK in July 2016 from Atromitos, costing the Enosis 600,000 euros, Since then, the goalkeeper standing at 1.95 meters has become a leading figure for AEK, gaining the number one spot between the sticks and impressing with excellent showings. Last summer, he received a serious injury which left him on the sidelines until late 2017, but Barkas returned to the squad after Giannis Anestis was frozen out and shared goalkeeping duties with Panagiotis Tsintotas in the Super League while participating in all knockout cup fixtures. As a reward for his success, Barkas made his senior Greek national team debut in a friendly match against Egypt (1:0) on March 27.
On Thursday afternoon, AEK announced that Barkas had renewed his contract through to 2022 in an official statement: “Vasilis Barkas has extended his AEK contract to 2022.”
Further on in the article published on AEK’s website, Barkas expressed his feelings from the contract extension: “This season was full of emotions. It all started with an injury, but later I started to play and now I’m a champion. I am very happy to continue playing here for the next four years and I hope to win more titles.”
Barkas thanked the club’s president, fans and players with a post on Instagram. According to Transfermarkt, Barkas’ transfer value is rated at one million.
Moving forward in the summer transfer window, AEK are still on the lookout for a winger and a striker. So far, Apollon Smyrnis forward Christos Almpanis is the Kitrinomavri’s only signing, while a deal for Ergotelis star Hugo Cuypers fell through when the Belgian refused to move to AEK.
