Barty beats Sakkari in Cincinnati
World number two Ashleigh Barty of Australia defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari 5-7 6-2 6-0 in the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters.
Barty, the top seed in this event, got off to a great start as she went up 5-2 in the first set. The Greek, looking for her third top 10 victory this week, then came back to take the set 7-5. Barty later took the second set 6-2 to force a third set. A 6-0 win over Sakkari in the third set gave the Aussie a spot in the semi-finals, where she will face Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova. Barty was great on serve throughout the match, hitting 12 aces.
Despite the loss, Sakkari can exit Cincinnati with her head high, as she will now move up from 33 to 31 in the WTA rankings. While this may not seem like a big jump in the rankings, the Greek will now be guaranteed to be seeded at the upcoming US Open, as she is back into the top 32.
