BREAKDOWN: SuperLeague Fight Against Relegation
With three matches to go in the 2016/17 Greek SuperLeague season, five teams are locked in a battle against relegation. Some, such as Asteras Tripolis and Larisa, have a little bit of a buffer from the bottom two relegation positions, while others such as Veria, Iraklis, and Levadiakos are in desperate need of points.
AGONAsport gives you the lowdown with the points, remaining schedules and analysis of the five teams involved.
CURRENT STANDINGS (Bottom 5)
Matchday 28: Xanthi (H)
Matchday 29: Veria (A)
Matchday 30: Iraklis (H)
Analysis: Asteras Tripolis Analysis: The club’s hierarchy hoped that the return of Staikos Vergetis would have a positive impact on the team and they have been proven right. After a few credible draws, Asteras recorded a massive 4-1 away win at Larisa this past Wednesday. The Tripoli side do have a tricky finish to the season. They play Veria and Iraklis, fellow relegation battlers, in their final two fixtures and before that they take on a Xanthi side aiming for the playoffs. Four points clear of the drop zone at this stage, the smart money is on Asteras to do enough to ensure safety.
Matchday 28: Atromitos (A)
Matchday 29: Xanthi (H)
Matchday 30: Panathinaikos (A)
Analysis: Larisa were looking good a few weeks’ back, however there is genuine concern now that the Vissini could face the drop. A 4-1 defeat to Asteras this past week was a massively poor result which now ensures a nail-biting finish to the season for supporters. Away matches at Atromitos and Panathinaikos sandwiched around a home game versus Xanthi suggests a very tough finish to the season. Should Larisa keep slumping then an unlikely drop down into the second division could occur.
Matchday 28: Olympiacos (H)
Matchday 29: AEK (H)
Matchday 30: Panionios (A)
Analysis: Levadiakos looked good after a draw against Xanthi two weeks ago and a victory over Veria last weekend. However, a 1-0 defeat to Iraklis now sees the club in real danger. Currently tied for second to last in the SuperLeague, Levadiakos have the most difficult set of remaining matches compared to any other side. Home matches against Olympiacos and AEK will precede an away match to Panionios to finish the season. It makes for gloomy reading if you are a supporter and Levadiakos will have to record their best results of the season should they expect to survive in the top-flight.
Matchday 28: PAS Giannina (A)
Matchday 29: Panetolikos (H)
Matchday 30: Asteras Tripolis (A)
Analysis: Iraklis have worked minor miracles to even stay in contention until this late stage. A 1-0 win over Levadiakos may have saved their season. Survival ultimately could depend on the result of the team’s result against Asteras Tripolis on Matchday 30. Before that it’s Panetolikos (home) and PAS Giannina (away).
Matchday 28: Panetolikos (A)
Matchday 29: Asteras Tripolis (H)
Matchday 30: Xanthi (A)
Analysis: For Veria, two recent wins over PAS Giannina and Kerkyra have set the tone for a possible ‘Great Escape’. Once considered dead and buried as far as staying up, Veria seem capable now on of pushing on toward safety. Two of their last three matches are away against Panetolikos and Xanthi. On Matchday 29, Ratko Dostanic’s team clashes with Asteras Tripolis in a very crucial match. Victory there could give Veria the boost they need to just avoid the drop.
