ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski has reported that Panathinaikos point guard Nick Calathes is eyeing a move back to the NBA when his contract with the Greek Champions expires this summer.
Fueled by Calathes’ decision to hire James Dunleavey as his agent in the United States, Wojnarowski claims that sources told ESPN that Calathes is open to making a move back to the NBA as a free agent this summer.
Calathes, a second-round draft pick of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2009 NBA draft, spent the first four years of his professional career in Europe after opting to bypass the NBA straight out of college.
After three years with Panathinaikos from 2009 to 2012, Calathes spent one further season in Europe with Russian side Lokomotiv Kuban before finally opting to join the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies – who acquired Calathes’ NBA rights via trade with the Dallas Mavericks – at the start of the 2013/2014 season.
While it is unclear where Calathes will end-up, the Greek international will be an interesting target for a handful of teams looking to add an experienced pass-first point guard to their line-up.
An early frontrunner for landing Calathes could be Oklahoma City, whose current head coach, Billy Donovan, was Calathes’ coach during him college days at the University of Florida.
