Double-doubles from James Gist and Nikos Calathes proved vital as Panathinaikos grinded out an 82-71 win over Unicaja Malaga at OAKA on Friday night.
Gist added 11 rebounds to his game-high 17 points, while Calathes added 12 assists to his 16 points on the night.
Meanwhile, Malaga’s Nemannja Nedovic led the visitors with 16 points but the Serbian’s efforts were enough to prevent Malaga from slipping to the foot of the EuroLeague table.
Panathinaikos assumed control after a tight first quarter as the Trifylli held a one-point lead after the first frame, but a Malaga fightback in the second quarter saw the Spanish side open up a three-point lead by halftime.
The third quarter would see Panathinaikos erase the deficit to pull level at 54-54 and set-up a tense finale in the Greek capital.
The pressure would seem to get the better of Malaga as the Spanish side crumbled in the fourth quarter; allowing Panathinaikos to put 28 points in the final frame en route to a double-digit victory despite trailing at halftime.
Panathinaikos are now 7-3 on the season, a record they share with Aegean rivals Fenerbahce for third place in the regular season standings.
Xavi Pascual’s next turn their attention to Lithuanian side Zalgiris Kaunas as the Greek Champions travel to the Baltic region on Thursday. Malaga, meanwhile, will look to escape from last place in the table when the Spanish side clash with domestic rivals Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz.
