Anderson Esiti will be unveiled as PAOK’s newest signing of the summer. The 25-year-old defensive midfielder, who plays his football at Gent in Belgium, will fill a major gap in PAOK’s roster for the new season as coach Abel Ferreira currently has limited options in the center of the park. The Portuguese manager expressed the need of quickly signing a defensive midfielder ahead of the upcoming UEFA Champions League clashes with Ajax and the administration acted quickly to answer his demands.

Esiti arrived in Horst, Holland on Wednesday, where PAOK are stationed for their second stage of preseason training, to sign his new deal with the Thessalonikis. The Nigerian has completed the necessary medical tests and will be officially announced by the clubon Thursday. PAOK will pay Gent a rumored 3.5 million euros for Esiti’s services.

Last season, Esiti made 30 appearances for Gent in all competitions without scoring a goal or registering an assist. Esiti has been on the books with Gent since 2016 having previously played for Leixões and Estoril in Portugal.

Coentrao move falls through

On Friday, Fabio Coentrao arrived in Thessaloniki to discuss a possible move to PAOK. After talking with the club’s officials and agreeing to personal terms, the experienced left-back asked for an extra 48 hours to make his final decision on whether to join PAOK.

However, family matters have stood in the way of him signing with the Dikefalos. His family is not in favor of a move to Greece and as a result, Coentrao responded negatively to PAOK’s offer of 700,000 euros a year. The latest rumors suggest that the left-back is expected to sign with Portuguese giants Porto by the end of the weekend.

Coentrao was on the books of Real Madrid between 2011 and 2018, winning La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana. Coentrao was loaned to AS Monaco and Sporting Lisbon before joining Rio Ave on a permanent basis in August 2018.

He gained five assists in the 2018/2019 Liga NOS season for Rio Ave. Transfermarkt rates his value at 2.5 million euros.

Wernbloom back in training

To the delight of coach Ferreira, Pontus Wernbloom took part in the team’s regular training session on Wednesday. Wernbloon suffered a terrible anterior cruciate ligament injury last season and was sidelined for six months. Wernbloom will continue to training with the rest of the team as he inches towards match-ready form.

Chatziisaias, Kitsiou, Khacheridi depart

Dimitris Chatziisaias and Stelios Kitsiou will continue their careers in Turkey with Rizespor and Ankaragucu, respectively. Chatziisaias rejoined PAOK this offseason after a loan spell at Atromitos, but failed to convince Ferreira for a spot on the roster. PAOK have agreed to sell the defender for a reported 500,000 euros to Turkish outfit Rizespor. Chatziisaias will travel to Turkey on Wednesday to sign his new deal.

Earlier in the week, Stelios Kitsiou made his move to Ankaragucu permanent after spending the second half of the season on loan in Turkey from PAOK. PAOK released an official statement on Monday announcing Kitsiou’s move. Kitsiou, who was on the books for PAOK for 12 seasons (including his time in the club’s academies), signed a three-year contract with the Turksih club. PAOK will receive a reported 200,000 euros for Kitsiou’s move.

As expected, Yevhen Khacheridi was released by PAOK after an extremely disappointing spell in Thessaloniki. The Ukrainian defender, who signed a hefty contract and was considered a key signing last summer, managed only 11 appearances across all competitions last season.
