Cyprus U19 move on to Elite Round in Euro 2019 qualifying
Cyprus U19 defeated Latvia 1:0 on Monday to book their ticket to the next round of EURO 2019 qualifying.
With a 1:0 win over Latvia on Monday, Cyprus’ U19 national team finished second in Group 11 behind Russia and advanced to the second and final Euro 2019 qualifying round (Elite Round). To open their qualifying campaign, Cyprus played to a goalless draw against Montenegro before falling 2:0 to eventual group winners Russia.
The Cypriots needed to win on the final matchday against Latvia and Neofytos Larkou’s players did just that at the Municipal stadium of Peyia in the district of Pafos. Daniil Paroutis was the game’s only scorer in the 28th minute after a corner kick from Michalis Ioannou. The youngsters earned a deserved win and will now have a chance to prove themselves in the Elite Round, which will also include the Greek U19 national team, and will take place in March 2019.
This was a great outcome for Cypriot football after the Men’s team tasted defeat to Norway in the UEFA Nations League, a result that will likely see Cyprus relegated to League D.
