APOEL played to a goalless draw with Slavia Prague in the Czech Republic and advanced to the group stages of the UEFA Champions League thanks to their 2-0 win over Slavia Prague from the first leg. It has been a complete turnaround for the Cypriot Champions under the guidance of manager Georgios Donis.
APOEL will make a return to the UEFA Champions League group stages for the first time since the 2014/15 season and for the fourth time in club history. The Thrylos of Cyprus took full advantage of their first leg 2-0 win in Nicosia and played to a goalless draw with Slavia Prague in Wednesday's second leg to march onto the group stages of the competition.
APOEL were stubborn in the back and left little space for the hosts to find their way to goal. However, Slavia pressed on for a goal which would give them the confidence and momentum to find a second, but Waterman was their to deny Slavia Prague on multiple occasions and keep the clean sheet for the visitors.
It has a been a complete turnaround for the Galazokitrini since Donis has taken over the club. Former coach, Been, barely led the side past Luxembourg champions Dudelange in the Champions League second qualifying round before losing to Viitorul in the first leg for the third qualifying round.
Donis took over for Been to lead the club past Viitorul with an emphatic 4-0 win in the second leg (in extra time) before guiding his team through two solid performances over Slavia Prague in the playoffs. Donis was also the man in charge the last man APOEL qualified for the group stages of the competition and will be the one to lead them once again into Europe's’ premier club competition.
The Galazokitrini will be present in Thursday’s group stage draw where they will be seeded in pot 4.
