It might have been a long night for Kostas Antetokounmpo on Thursday evening after the former University of Dayton talent sat through 59 picks in the 2018 NBA Draft at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York; however, in the end the long wait was well worth it.
Tipped to be a late second-round pick at best in the draft, Antetokounmpo’s draft projection became a reality when the Philadelphia 76ers drafted the 20-year-old with the final overall pick in the draft. However, Antetokounmpo’s rights were immediately traded to the Dallas Mavericks.
With his NBA rights viewed by many teams in the league as a potential bargaining chip for teams to negotiate with Kostas’ older brother Giannis, the second round of the draft progressed with plenty of intrigue within the Antetokounmpo camp.
Alas, Antetokounmpo was rescued from certain misery as the 76ers (then traded to the Mavericks) made Kostas the third in his family to be drafted by an NBA team as he joins the likes of his older brothers Giannis and Thanasis. He will continue his career in Dallas with hopes of making an impression in the G-League and gain an eventual place on their NBA roster.
