Dunajska Streda advance to play Atromitos in UEL qualifying
Dunajska Streda pulled off the surprise over Cracovia and advanced to play Atromitos in the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round.
Atromitos, who finished fourth in the Super League for a second consecutive season, earned a ticket to the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds, beginning their quest for the group stages in the second round. The Peristeri outfit were seeded in the draw and paired with the winner of Cracovia (POL) and Dunajska Streda (SVK) from the first qualifying round.
The two teams played to a 1:1 draw in the first leg in Slovakia, leaving the visitors from Poland with a slight advantage heading into Thursday’s second leg. In Poland, the hosts got off to a flying start as Rafel Lopez opened the scoring in just the second minute of play to put the home side fully in control. However, Dunajska Streda found the precious away goal two minutes after the restart to level things on aggregate at 2:2. With neither team finding a goal in the remainder of the regulation, the match was sent into extra time.
It was the visitors who pulled ahead through Eric Ramirez in the 94th minute to register their second away goal, meaning the hosts had to score twice to advance. Cracovia managed an equalizer in the dying moments of extra time, however, it was not enough as Dunajska Streda pulled off the surprise to advance on away goals (3:3 aggregate) to the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round to face Atromitos.
The Greek side will be the favorites to progress as they were last season when they entered this stage of the competition. However, the Atromitos fell in dramatic fashion to Dynamo Brest from Belarus and ended their European campaign early in the season.
The first leg will take place in Slovakia on Thursday, July 25th with the second leg scheduled one week later at the Peristeri stadium.
