Everything You Need to Know About the SuperLeague Playoffs
The Greek Superleague playoffs kick off tomorrow and AGONAsport.com brings you everything you need to know about this year's playoffs.
The Greek Superleague playoffs consist of the teams that ranked 2nd-5th during the regular season. This year's playoff teams include PAOK (2nd), Panathinaikos (3rd), AEK (4th), and Panionios (5th).
The four teams will play in a “mini league” consisting of home and away fixtures against each team, totaling six games per team. The final standings of the playoffs will determine which teams will play in next year's UEFA Champions and Europa League.
However, this will be the last year of the current format of the Greek Superleague playoffs. Next year, the playoffs will consist of the teams ranked 1st-6th while the playouts, which will decide who will be relegated to the Football League, will consist of the teams ranked 7th-16th. PAOK will begin the playoffs with two points while Panathinaikos begin with one point. AEK and Panionios will each start off pointless. Only 33% of the points accumulated in the regular season carry over to the playoffs.
PAOK finished the regular season with 61 points and will take 20 points into the playoffs. Panathinaikos finished with 57 points and will take 19 points to the playoffs. AEK finshed with 53 points and will take 18 points to the playoffs. Panionios finished the regular season with 52 points and will take 18 pioints into the playoffs. To simplify matters, the teams will begin with the following points:
PAOK - 2pts
Panathinaikos - 1pts
AEK - 0pts
Panionios - 0pts
The winner of the Greek Superleague playoffs will earn a place in next year’s UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, where as the three remaining teams will play in next year’s UEFA Europa League. The second and third placed teams from the playoffs will enter the UEFA Europa league third qualifying round while the last placed team in the playoffs will enter the UEFA Europa league second qualifying round.
Since PAOK have won the Greek Cup, they are guaranteed a place in the Europa League 3rd qualifying round. Thus, if they finish in last place of the playoffs, the team that finishes third in the playoffs will enter next year's Europa League 2nd qualifying round and PAOK will play in the Europa League 3rd qualifying round.
