First eternal derby behind closed doors
Olympiacos take on Panathinaikos at the Karaiskakis Stadium on Sunday, but for the first time in history, Greece’s eternal derby will take place behind closed doors.
Watch the Superleague derby of the eternal enemies between Olympiacos & Panathinaikos LIVE from AGONAsport.com on Sunday, March 4th.
Never before had Olympiacos and Panathinaikos played against each other in front of an empty stadium, but history will be made in Piraeus on Sunday. Following the chaos during the game with AEK Athens, Olympiacos were punished with a three point deduction and two home matches without fans. While the appeal against the decision is ongoing, the Thrylos had no choice but to host Panionios and Panathinaikos in an empty Karaiskakis Stadium.
However, in the past, a handful of eternal derbies did take place in different cities. The most recent examples can be found back in 1981 when the two teams played out a 1:1 draw in Patras, before 1982 when Olympiacos defeated Panathinaikos 2:1 in Volos. All other meetings have largely been hosted by the Nea Filadelfia, OAKA, Apostolos Nikolaidis and Karaiskakis stadiums.
Nevertheless, despite Olympiacos’ stadium ban, plenty of Thrylos fans are expected to flock to the Karaiskakis Stadium on match day and support their heroes from outside the arena.
