Podence deserves the right to be considered one of the best players in the Super League. Incredibly gifted technically, the 23-year-old has been a shining light for Olympiacos throughout the season, catching the eye with his wonderful skill. Standing a mere 165 centimeters tall, Podence’s low scene of gravity helps him to showcase his fantastic control of the ball. When on form, Podence is capable of winning matches practically by himself, something which he demonstrated perfectly by scoring two goals in Sunday’s 4:1 Super League victory against Aris at the Karaiskakis Stadium. For his first marker, he controlled a floating pass excellently before whipping a deflected attempt beyond Aris goalkeeper Julian Cuesta, and he repeated the trick at a crucial time in the second half when embarking on a powerful solo run. No wonder why he’s known as ‘The Magician’ in Piraeus.

Impressively, this is already Podence’s most productive club season, as he boasts eight goals and seven assists in 36 matches across all competitions. Here are all of Podence’s statistics in his previous seasons as a professional player:

2018/2019: 36 matches, 8 goals, 7 assists

2017/2018: 20 matches, 0 goals, 8 assists

2016/2017: 31 matches, 4 goals, 6 assists

2015/2016: 39 matches, 6 goals, 8 assists

2014/2015: 37 matches, 3 goals, 2 assists

2013/2014: 4 matches, 0 goals, 0 assists

2012/2013: 7 matches, 0 goals, 0 assists

On the left flank, Podence has brilliantly showcased his ability, beating his opponents one on one and attacking with threatening pace. At times, there’s been real concern about the lack of end product to his play, but as the campaign has progressed, Podence has began to be more effective in the final third. If he manages to improve that component of his game even further, he might not be playing his football in Piraeus much longer.

Podence transferred to Olympiacos from Sporting Lisbon in controversial circumstances last summer. His value is currently rated at 4.5 million euros by Transfermarkt.
