Greece bow out to Italy in quarter-finals
FINA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - QUARTERFINALS
Greece’s men’s national water polo team bowed out of the 2019 World Championships, after a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to Italy in the quarter-finals.
Coming into the match, the two sides were very familiar with each other. Since 2014, they had played each other six times in major competitions, with Greece winning four of those meetings, and also having one draw. The only time Italy won was the last time they faced each other, which was in the quarter-finals at the 2016 Olympics.
This time around, the match was close from the get-go, as the score was 2-2 after the first period. The Italians then led 4-3 at halftime.
Despite going down 5-3 in the third period, Greece bounced back by scoring three consecutive goals to go up 6-5. However, an Italian goal late in the third period leveled the score at 6-6. In the fourth period, there was just one goal from either team. It was scored by Italy’s Francesco Di Fulvio, who gave his country a 7-6 lead, which would be the final score.
Konstantinos Genidounias and Alexandros Gounas led Greece offensively with two goals each. Greece will now compete in the 5th–8th place semifinals and will take on Australia on Thursday.
