Reigning champions Greece have crashed out of the 2018 FIBA U20 European Championship after a Round of 16 loss to Italy on Wednesday…
Italy have ended Greece’s reign as U20 European Champions following a 76-70 defeat of their Adriatic neighbours at the 2018 FIBA U20 European Championship in Chemnitz, Germany on Wednesday.
Greece, who finished the group phase with a 1-2 record following back-to-back losses to Germany and Israel, failed to rebound despite a better showing than their group stage finale.
Michalis Lountzis notched 14 points to lead all Greek scorers on the night, while Dimitris Moraitis added 12 points for the Ethniki Neon.
Italy, who established a 41-33 lead by halftime, were powered by their ability to draw fouls as the Italians earned 35 attempts from the foul line and converted 80% of their shots from the stripe.
Greece began to chip into the Italian lead in the third quarter, but Giannis Kastritis’ side failed to recover from a sluggish start as Italy held on to book a date with Croatia in the quarterfinals.
Although Greece’s reign as champions is set to be over, Greece will look to remain in the top division beginning with a clash with Great Britain on Thursday as part of the classification fixtures for spots 9-16.
