American nightmare for Greece
FINA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - QUARTER-FINALS
Greece’s women’s national water polo team was beaten 15-5 by two-time defending champion USA in the quarterfinals of the 2019 World Championships.
Coming into the match, the Americans had won their last 50 competitive matches, and had also dominated their recent matches against Greece. The Americans comfortably defeated the Greeks in a series of friendlies leading up to the World Championships. The Americans also scored a 15-7 win over the Greeks in 2016 Olympic qualifying, and two wins at the 2013 World Championships, including one on penalties in the fifth place game.
Today, the Americans got off to a good start and never looked back, leading 4-0 through the first period of play. By halftime, they had extended their lead to 8-2. The Greeks later reduced the deficit to 8-4, but two American goals late in the third period saw the Americans go up 10-4 after three periods of play. A dominant fourth period saw the Americans claim a 15-5 win.
Nikoleta Eleftheriadou and Eleni Xenaki led Greece with two goals each. Greece’s other goal was scored by Alkisti Avramidou.
Greece will now play on Wednesday against Russia in the 5th–8th place semifinals.
