Serbia hand Greece first loss
FINA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - GROUP A (MD 3)
Greece’s men’s national water polo team fell 9-3 to Serbia in the last game of group play at the 2019 World Championships, and the Greeks will now face the USA for a spot in the quarter-finals.
From the very beginning, Serbia showed why they are widely regarded as the best team in the world. The reigning Olympic champions and four-time defending European champions found themselves ahead 3-1 after the first period of play. They then extended this lead to 6-3 by halftime.
After a scoreless third period from both sides, the Serbians had a strong fourth period, ultimately winning 9-3. Greece’s three goals in this game were scored by Ioannis Fountoulis, Alexandros Gounas, and Konstantinos Mourikis.
Serbia has now finished first in Group A and advances to the quarter-finals. Montenegro and Greece finished second and third respectively, and both advance to the playoffs. Hosts South Korea finished in fourth place and are now eliminated from the competition.
Greece will play against the United States on Sunday, with the winner to advance to take on Italy in the quarter-finals. Greece and the United States have met twice in major competitions in recent years. In the group stage of the 2015 World Championships, Greece prevailed 11-10, and went on to win bronze. Then, in the 2016 World League, the Americans beat the Greeks on penalties in the semi-finals.
