Greece U17 advance to Elite Round despite loss to Belgium

The Greece U17 national team booked their place in the Elite qualifying round for Euro 2019 despite losing to Belgium 3:0 on Wednesday.
Greece U17 celebrated a second place finish in Group 12 of the first qualifying round for Euro 2019 and as a result, booked their place in the second and final qualifying phase, the Elite round. The Greek team, who played with 10-men from the 58th minute, fell to a powerful Belgium side 3:0 on Wednesday in the final match in group play. Thankfully for Greece, Moldova and Latvia played to a 2:2 draw in the group’s other mathc securing Greece’s runner-up place in Group 12.
Belgium opened the scoring late in the first half through El Hadj and the Red Devils added an insurance marker five minutes after the restart through Idumbo-Muzambo. Grosidis’ second yellow card left Greece with 10-men and Idumbo-Muzambo added his second of the night with ten minutes remaining to secure Belgium’s big 3:0 win.
In the other group match between Moldova and Latvia, where Greece needed anything but a Latvia win to secure second spot, Moldova took a 2:0 lead into halftime. The Latvians, however, came back to pull level late in the second half, but it was not enough as the match ended in a 2:2 draw.
Wednesday’s results gave Belgium a perfect nine points from three matches and first place in the group while Greece finish second with four points. Latvia claim third place while Moldova finish bottom of the group with a single point.
