As expected, it was an easy night for the Ethniki Neon on Saturday as they cruised past Gibraltar in matchday 2 of EURO 2018 qualifying. The national team came away with a comfortable 5-0 victory over their weak opponents and will now fight with Russia in the final group fixture for a place in the next round of qualifying.

The Greek U19s put the game away early in first half with Giousis and Dalakouras finding the back of the net in the 16th and 37th minutes. Emmanouilidis added a third just before the halftime break to give Greece a comfortable 3-0 advantage going into the second half.

Greece took their foot off the gas in the second 45 minutes of play and did not manage to find the back of the net until the 78th minute with Giousis adding his second of the night. Gibraltar, who had been left with ten men in the 65th minute, were unable to put up a fight and Douvikas’ goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time gave Greece the emphatic 5-0 victory.

Greece sit tied for second with Russia in Group 10, however the Russians hold an advantage due to their better goal differential (+5 compared to Greece’s +4). Thus, in the final fixture between the two sides, Greece must defeat Russia (a draw will not do) to claim second spot and advance to the next qualifying round. Russia defeated Gibraltar 6-0 in their first match while falling to Romania 2-1 on Saturday in matchday 2 action.

The do or die matchup between Greece and Russia will take on Tuesday, November 14th in Crete.
